In the space of a year, from 2019 to 2020, marked by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, life expectancy stagnated or receded in most European Union (EU) member states, according to provisional data released recently by Eurostat. What is the life expectancy in Portugal in 2020 and leading into 2021? According to this new data, in Portugal, the drop in life expectancy was 8 months, from the previous higher value of 81.9 to 81.1 years.
According to the European statistics office, the coronavirus pandemic caused life expectancy at birth to fall in most member states. The exceptions were Denmark and Finland, where it rose slightly (by one month in both cases), while the biggest falls were in Spain (-1.6 years), Bulgaria (-1.5 years) and Lithuania, Poland and Romania (-1.4 years each).
