COVID-19 self-test kits in Portugal, also known as rapid antigen tests, can now be bought in Portuguese supermarkets. The measure was originally announced by MP Mariana Vieira da Silva on 15th July 2021 and tests are already available in some stores. "The Government has approved a decree-law that allows the sale of self-tests in supermarkets in Portugal." This was the conclusion of MPs in Portugal during the summer, stating that the measure will make the identification of positive cases of COVID-19 easier and quicker, at a time when Portugal is at a critical stage in the health crisis.
"There is a race against time between the vaccination process, which is being extended daily, and the evolution of the pandemic", stressed Mariana Vieira da Silva, stating that it is necessary, therefore, "to insist on the testing process, the identification of positives and self-isolation".
It is expected that COVID-19 self-test-kits will soon be available in all Portuguese supermarkets. For now, Mercadona in Portugal has already started selling them as of 30th July 2021 for a price of 2.10 euros.
