Eurobarometer data from the end of 2021 highlights that 72% of European Union (EU) citizens say their country has benefited from being a member of the Union, although the percentage varies from nation to nation. In Ireland, for example, 95% of the population are happy to be EU members. In Austria, the percentage falls: only 54% of citizens say EU membership is a good thing. Those living in Portugal are among the most satisfied with EU membership.

Ireland (95%), Luxembourg (92%) and Lithuania (91%) achieve the best ranking, followed by Malta (89%), Portugal (88%) and Denmark (86%). Spain is also satisfied with the benefits the country has gained from being a member of the European Union with 81%, behind the Netherlands (82%), but ahead of major powers such as Germany (73%), France or Italy (both 63%).

When it comes to Portugal and its 88% satisfaction rate with the EU, it can be said that the image of the EU and trust in the EU have increased amongst the resident population in Portugal according to Eurobarometer 2021. Some of the top issues concerning Portuguese residents are, for example, the health and economic situation both at EU and national level.
