A five-star hotel with 197 rooms is set to be built as part of the Algarve's new Verdelago Resort, including six secluded suites in the middle of the pine forest (Forest Suites). The establishment, bearing the Marriott quality hallmark and a strong emphasis on sustainability in its architectural and construction aspects, as well as in energy, water supply, and future tourism operations, will materialise following an investment of €52.5 million from Verdelago - Sociedade Imobiliária S.A.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the future hotel, due for completion in 2027, took place on 26th June 2024, as announced by the company.

This hotel "represents a significant investment for the region and will also contribute to enhancing the attractiveness of this area of the Algarve, which currently lacks luxury accommodation capable of accommodating the growth in demand," stated Joaquim Goes, administrator of Verdelago S.A., as quoted in the statement.
According to the Goes, the company aims for Verdelago Resort to be 'one of the benchmark resorts in Southern Europe, with a concept of sustainable luxury' and capable of attracting 'tourism markets with high income levels.'
Additionally, the hotel will contribute to the creation of over 200 direct jobs, in addition to the approximately 300 jobs created in the resort's tourism operations.

"The new Marriott hotel will be part of Verdelago Resort, a project that stands out in the national tourist-residential sector for its low building density, covering 86 hectares of land with only 8.7% developed. Of these, 70 hectares are dedicated to vegetation, including a Green Recreation and Leisure Park spanning about 42 hectares, a seafront nature reserve covering 24 hectares, areas for environmental interpretation, habitat conservation, and promotion, and a two-hectare lake," as stated in the document.
The company also highlights Verdelago Resort as a space surrounded by extensive green areas and two-kilometre wooden walkways leading guests to observation towers offering a 360-degree view of the surroundings. Moreover, it is the first tourist resort in the country to adhere to Green Globe certification, one of the most rigorous international certifications for sustainable tourism.

A tourist resort with a strong real estate component
Verdelago is a tourist resort with a strong real estate component, as it will have a total of 340 residential units (apartments, villas, and townhouses). These will be built in different phases, with 92 already in tourist operation, "and in high demand for this summer vacation period," according to the company.
According to Verdelago - Sociedade Imobiliária, S.A., "since the beginning of the project, the main clients have been domestic, as Portuguese people have a special connection with the Eastern Algarve, due to the combination of authenticity with nature and extensive sandy beaches, without the hustle and bustle of other tourist destinations in the Algarve." "Among international clients, those from Spain, USA, UK, and Poland stand out," it adds.
