Albufeira has once again confirmed its place among Portugal’s most sought-after holiday spots, recording nearly 900,000 overnight stays in June 2025 alone. According to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on 31 July, the Algarve continues to dominate as the country’s favourite region for visitors, with Albufeira leading the way locally.

A regional and national leader in tourism

During June, the Algarve accounted for almost 30% of all overnight stays in Portugal, with Albufeira taking the top spot within the region. The municipality recorded 11.1% of the national total, making it the second most visited destination in the country – just behind Lisbon – and responsible for more than one-third of all overnight stays in the Algarve.

Neighbouring towns such as Lagos and Portimão are also experiencing growth, but Albufeira’s popularity remains unmatched, thanks to its mix of golden beaches, lively nightlife, family-friendly attractions, and a diverse range of accommodation.

A positive outlook for the rest of 2025

The mayor of Albufeira, José Carlos Rolo, described the latest figures as “encouraging for the rest of the year,” attributing the success to the quality and variety of the local hotel offering. He emphasised that Albufeira has firmly established itself as the capital of tourism in the Algarve, delivering strong benefits for the local economy.

INE data also highlights a continued upward trend in tourism for the first half of 2025, with a 1.7% increase in guest numbers, a 0.3% rise in overnight stays, and a 5.5% boost in total revenue compared to the same period in 2024.

Breaking seasonality trends

Mayor Rolo noted a shift away from traditional seasonality in recent years. Strategic efforts to attract visitors outside the summer peak – particularly by hosting major sporting events – have helped sustain tourism throughout the year, reducing reliance on the high season.

Living in Albufeira: more than just a holiday destination

For those who fall in love with the area, Albufeira offers more than just a place to visit – it’s also a fantastic place to live. Expats are drawn to its year-round sunshine, excellent international schools, thriving expat community, and high quality of life. The combination of modern amenities, a relaxed coastal lifestyle, and easy access to Faro Airport makes it ideal for both permanent relocation and part-time living. From luxury villas with private pools to charming townhouses near the marina, property options are as varied as the lifestyle opportunities.
