The Algarve cycle route map is to have a new addition. The council of Aljezur, in the Faro district of the Algarve, has approved the implementation of a project that will allow for the construction of around 76 kilometres (kms) of cycle paths along the county's coastline, located in the southwestern area of the Algarve, the municipality announced. Therefore, if you're planning a trip to enjoy the coastline by cycling in Portugal, here's everything you need to know about this new 76km cycle path in the Algarve.
The local authorities in Aljezur have stated that the Cycle Paths of the Southwest Algarve - Aljezur project is "made up of several stretches" and will enable a "sustainable mobility" link to be built between Odeceixe and Carrapateira, with the work to be carried out in two phases.
The first phase of the work is centred on a stretch of approximately 60 kilometres and has a budget estimate of 660,000 euros, reads a note from the Faro district local authority.
For this part of the work an international tender has already been launched, and it is expected to be funded by around 90% by the Algarve CRESCE 2020 Operational Programme and by Turismo de Portugal, Aljezur council stated.
"The second phase of the implementation project of the Southwest Coast Cycle Paths [...], with a length of 16.837 kilometres and a budget estimate of 3,922,000 euros, plus VAT, will be left to apply to the next 2030 Community Framework," the municipality clarified.
The municipality inserted this investment in its "sustainable mobility policy" for the environment and argued that the creation of this cycling infrastructure will "promote the use of soft mobility means" in the municipality, as well as the "offer of a tourism product".
At the same time, the initiative will "raise awareness of the use of alternative, environmentally friendly means of locomotion" and encourage the "well-being and healthy development of the population", concluded the local council.
