This innovative thermal complex, located in the heart of the Trás-os-Montes region, represents a major investment in the city’s tourism infrastructure. Come and discover the first outdoor thermal pools in mainland Portugal.
What are the outdoor thermal pools like?

The recently inaugurated Aquae Salutem Thermal Complex in Chaves offers outdoor hydrodynamic pools, fed by naturally warm waters that emerge at 76°C. Located next to the Thermal Spa, this space was designed to provide a wellbeing experience in harmony with nature.
The complex can accommodate 104 people and is the result of a total investment of 2.4 million euros, financed by the Northern Regional Operational Programme. It is integrated into the already existing Chaves Thermal Baths. In addition to the pools, the circuit also includes a sauna, steam room, and sensory showers with sound effects and thermal oscillations, including an Ice Fountain.
The thermal tradition of Chaves
The thermal tradition of Chaves dates back to Roman times when the healing properties of its hot waters were discovered and valued. In the 1st century AD, the Romans established the city of Aquae Flaviae, a name reflecting the importance of the thermal springs in the region. The Roman baths built during this period were expanded in the 3rd century and remained in use until an earthquake at the end of the 4th century.
The thermal waters of Chaves are rich in minerals such as sodium, silica, fluoride, and bicarbonate. These characteristics give them recognised therapeutic properties, being recommended for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, digestive issues including gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome, and respiratory problems like rhinitis and asthma.
Other thermal destinations in Portugal
In Portugal, in addition to Chaves, several other thermal destinations stand out from North to South, such as:
- São Pedro do Sul Thermal Baths, known for their modern facilities and diverse treatments;
- Gerês Thermal Baths, located in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, offering a unique combination of natural landscapes and therapies;
- Monchique Thermal Baths in the Algarve, famous for their alkaline waters and peaceful environment.
What are the benefits of thermal waters?

The thermal waters are rich in minerals such as sulphur, sodium, calcium, and magnesium, each with specific beneficial effects on the body. Sulphur, for example, has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation and joint pain. Calcium and magnesium contribute to bone and muscle health, promoting muscle strengthening and relaxation. The high temperature of the thermal waters also improves blood circulation, enhancing tissue oxygenation and the elimination of toxins.
Due to these properties, thermal waters are often recommended for treating various health conditions. In the musculoskeletal field, they are indicated for relieving symptoms of rheumatism, arthritis, and muscle pain, promoting relaxation and mobility.
