Porto’s world-famous Livraria Lello has been officially recognised as a national monument — but visitors planning a trip should note that the landmark bookshop will temporarily close for renovation works.
The shutdown is expected to last one week between April and May.
For more than a century, the historic bookstore in Porto has built a remarkable success story, evolving into one of Portugal’s most visited cultural and tourist attractions. The new status formally protects the building while reinforcing its cultural importance.
The announcement was made during celebrations marking the bookshop’s 120th anniversary, when Prime Minister Luís Montenegro confirmed the Government would reclassify the Livraria Lello Porto building as a national monument.
The move aims to ensure the “lasting protection and enhancement of this landmark building for the country’s collective memory and cultural identity”.
Aurora Pedro Pinto, administrator of Livraria Lello Porto, said the recognition “enhances Porto, enhances the country, and honours everyone who works in this house every day”, stressing that books remain at the core of the venue’s impact.
Why Livraria Lello is closing
Despite the celebratory news, the management confirmed the bookshop will temporarily shut its doors to carry out deep maintenance works on the historic building. The project will also continue the expansion designed by renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
According to Pedro Pinto, overwhelming demand from visitors now requires tighter crowd management and ongoing technical upgrades.
“The temporary closure, for one week between April and May, will allow us to implement these improvements while safeguarding the century-old space and maintaining the quality of the cultural experience,” she said.
What visitors should know
The closure is expected to be brief, but travellers planning spring visits to Porto should check dates in advance. Once the works are complete, the newly designated national monument is set to continue welcoming thousands of visitors daily — now with enhanced protection for the future.
