With summer already underway, the desire to enjoy the sea for more than just laying out a towel grows. If you like movement, adrenaline, or simply trying something new in the water, there are several beaches in Portugal ideal for doing water sports.

From surfing and kitesurfing to stand-up paddleboarding and diving, these beaches offer natural conditions and specialised schools so you can make the most of your swimming season.

In Ericeira's World Surfing Reserve, Ribeira d'Ilhas Beach is one of the best places to start or improve your surfing. The waves are long and consistent, allowing you to gain confidence and practice manoeuvres with more stability, whatever your level.

Along the beach, you will find several schools where you can book lessons or rent equipment, even if you have never tried it before.

It is also here that various surfing competitions take place, including stages of national and international championships.

If you prefer something different, you can also try bodyboarding and enjoy the regular waves. Between training sessions, lessons, and events, getting out of the towel and into the water is truly part of the spirit of this place.

Between the sea and the lagoon, Praia da Lagoa de Albufeira, in Sesimbra, is an excellent choice if you want to try stand-up paddleboarding without worrying about strong waves. The inner lagoon offers calm and shallow waters, ideal for you to start practising with more confidence.

Here you can paddle in peace, practice your balance, and explore the water at your own pace. It's also a popular spot for canoeing and windsurfing, thanks to the ample space and stable conditions throughout the summer.

If you want a change of pace, just cross over to the seaside and experience a different dynamic. This combination of lagoon and ocean makes Lagoa de Albufeira one of the most versatile beaches for those who enjoy water activities.

If you're looking for space and wind, São Jacinto Beach in Aveiro might be the right choice. The wide sandy beach gives you freedom to move around, and the constant wind creates good conditions for kitesurfing or windsurfing.

You can take advantage of the windier days to gain speed on the water and test your limits. If you already have some experience with surfing and sailing, you'll feel that the conditions are working in your favour.

The proximity to the Aveiro Lagoon also allows for the exploration of more sheltered areas, should you prefer more controlled conditions. It's an interesting alternative for those who want to get off the beaten path and try something different.

We headed to the Algarve, more precisely to Praia da Rocha, in Portimão. With its extensive golden sand and generally calm sea, it's one of the most iconic beaches in the region and a good choice if you want to combine relaxation and activity.

If you enjoy speed, you can try jet skiing and explore the coast with more adrenaline. The relatively calm waters make the experience accessible even for those who have never tried the sport.

For something different, parasailing allows you to soar into the air and enjoy panoramic views of the sea and cliffs. Banana boat rides, on the other hand, are ideal for groups who want guaranteed fun on the water.
