The New Year’s celebrations in Porto are, without a doubt, among the most emblematic in the whole of Portugal. Normally, there is a party for the city Invicta every year centred around the Avenue of the Allies.

On this very special day, the city of Porto prepares to open its arms to the New Year. All the streets in the city centre are closed to cars and fill up with both tourists and locals, experiencing to the max the festive atmosphere that’s in the air.

Around here, you will find concerts on makeshift stages in various streets of the city. The Avenida de los Aliados is the venue for the big event of the night, where you can marvel at the fireworks that illuminate the city for a full 15 minutes.

If you’re looking for music, fun, good food and the sea, Nazaré may be just the right destination for you. The city, famous for the giant waves of its beaches, is also known for its New Year's party. In the afternoon, the beach is the site of various concerts that only stop to celebrate midnight.

If you are brave, take advantage of your stay to surf in the energetic sea of the Nazarene coast. It will make this New Year's Eve one you will never forget.

The Algarve is not only a summer destination. All the main cities of the southern coast welcome in the New Year in style, and not least among them is Albufeira.

It is at the Fishermen's Beach, the Praia dos Pescadores, where the magic happens. Every year, a full roster of well-known artists fill the big stage and at 12pm sharp, music signals the start of the famous firework display.

When the party starts to calm down on the beach, we recommend that you explore the bars in the city centre and celebrate the coming of 2020.

Obviously, Lisbon couldn’t not be on the list. The Portuguese capital knows how to celebrate any occasion and New Year is no exception.

The activities and events on offer in Lisbon on New Year's Eve are not particularly different from the other destinations, but the difference lies in the scale. If you want loads of joy and confusion (in a good way), central Lisbon is the place for you. Lisbon offers all kinds of different atmospheres and parties: if your goal is to celebrate with friends or family, here you’re sure to find what you’re looking for.

The most popular destination to spend the New Year in Portugal is, without a doubt, Funchal. So if you've never been to the island of Madeira, or you've been but always wanted to go back, now is the perfect time.

Funchal sees in the New Year like no other Portuguese city. The temperate heat provides a fantastic atmosphere, which combined with the paradisiacal landscape makes Funchal a unique destination.

The great strength of this celebration is, without a doubt, the fireworks, known as the most explosive in Portugal: they were even put into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007 as the biggest fireworks show in the world on New Year's Eve!
