With the arrival of spring, it’s time for new beginnings and a fresh look, so if you’re thinking about doing up your kitchen, here’s a handy guide to help you and give you some cheap kitchen design ideas. In this article prepared for idealista/news by Fixando, the Portuguese platform for finding tradesmen, we have used real asking prices and budgets to understand how much it really costs to remodel a kitchen in Portugal.

All the data come from 2018 and represent an average price, but the cost of each service will always depend on the contractor and the materials you use, the size of your kitchen and to what extent you want to renovate it. To reach some sort of conclusion, we look at the various steps and services you need to remodel your kitchen.

The first thing that normally happens is reflooring, which is the part of the work that always requires a greater investment. If the kitchen floor is made of stone or tile, the cost of remodelling is, on average, 900 euro. However, the typical type of flooring you find in Portuguese kitchens uses azulejos, a delicate material that involves a slightly more expensive type of work, about 1,100 euro.

As we've already explained, what to consider when remodelling a kitchen is how much you want to do as this is what will most affect the cost. An example of a more heavy-duty and expensive service is building a new kitchen cabinet, which costs an average of 620 euro. However, if we talk about making several new cupboards, this figure will logically increase. On the other hand, painting kitchen cabinets and updating them on a budget is a much cheaper way to remodel the look of a kitchen.

Painting the walls is another thing to consider that is vital when decorating a new kitchen, which costs an average of 600 euro. Painting is an added extra that can be included in an interior design plan, which, given the usual size of a kitchen in Portugal, costs an average of 650 euro.

Prices of the most important services when remodelling a kitchen:

  • The plumbing involves dozens of variables that drastically change the price. However, on average, a common plumbing refurbishment service is 125 euro.
  • Installing and checking the gas lines and supply, as well as the mere repair and inspection of gas, were frequently requested on the platform, at a total cost of 175 euro (the inspection costs are, on average, between 55 and 70 euro).
  • The condition of the cooker hood is an important factor to take into account. Both replacing an old extractor fan and installing of a new extractor hood cost on average 70 euro.
  • Regarding basic appliances, even if it is a refurbishment, it makes sense to think more about just maintaining or repairing your existing appliances than buying new ones. For 65 euro you can get a full maintenance or repair of a refrigerator, while the same type of service for your stove and oven costs about 35 euro. For a dishwasher, the average price is 45 euro.

If your kitchen refurbishment includes all the factors outlined above, a thorough remodel can cost an average of 3,500 euro. However, if you leave out some things like new kitchen cabinets and the painting and interior design, it is possible to remodel a kitchen in Portugal for about 1,600 euro.

Most kitchen renovations in Portugal take place during the months of June and August, a fact that may be explained by the summer months when people are more willing to do construction work in their homes, says Fixando, so get thinking about some ideas of how to update and remodel your kitchen now!
