Can I buy a house in Portugal with Bitcoin? The answer is yes, and although not very significant in number, in Portugal there are already several cases of buying and selling properties in cryptocurrencies. When it comes to real estate and bitcoin in Portugal, most sales take place south of the Tagus, namely in Lisbon and the Algarve, according to data revealed by the Order of Notaries in Portugal.

Last year, according to Expresso, notaries made 13 deeds of purchase and sale of property whose payment was made in the form of digital assets. Bitcoin or ethereum were the two cryptocurrencies used as means of payment in real estate transactions, the publication also indicates.

But seven deeds were also refused, for various reasons: lack of compliance in the requirements regarding the prevention of money laundering; lack of technological knowledge to carry out the transaction; or doubts about tax rules to be applied.

"The numbers reflect that there are people willing to conduct business with cryptocurrencies in Portugal, but that there is also a lot of work to be done to have a clearer and more global legislative framework," Jorge Batista da Silva, head of the Order of Notaries, tells the Portuguese newspaper Expresso.
