Portugal is fast becoming the top retirement destination for Irish citizens—and it’s easy to see why. With a sunnier climate, an active outdoor lifestyle, and significantly lower living costs, retirees are increasingly swapping Ireland’s rain for Portugal’s warmth and affordability.

According to data from Expatistan, life in Lisbon is 36% cheaper than in Dublin. Porto offers a 44% cost saving, while Faro—at the heart of the sun-drenched Algarve—is an impressive 46% cheaper. For retirees looking to make their pension go further, these numbers are hard to ignore.

But it’s not just about money. Portugal offers over 390 Blue Flag beaches, around 100 golf courses, and a vibrant culture that revolves around outdoor living. From hiking in the hills to sailing along the coast, there’s no shortage of ways to stay active. Affordable cafes, wine bars, and restaurants with open-air terraces also support a sociable lifestyle that many Irish retirees value.

The country’s strong infrastructure is another draw, especially for those interested in semi-retirement. With high-speed internet, modern healthcare and good public transport, part-time or remote working is easily achievable. Direct flights from Dublin to Lisbon, Porto, and Faro make it simple to maintain close ties with family and friends back home.

“Retiring to the sunshine is the dream for many,” says Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce. “Moving to Portugal turns that dream into a reality – and is easier than many people realise.”

To support those considering the move, the free Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars will be held in Dublin on 22nd May 2025 at the Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge. Running from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm, the event offers a wealth of information through presentations, seminars and panel discussions.

Experts in property, tax, finance, and legal matters will be on hand to guide attendees through the practicalities of retiring in Portugal. A financial adviser will also explain how Irish citizens can claim their pensions while living abroad—a crucial topic for many.

With so much to offer in terms of lifestyle, affordability, and accessibility, Portugal is proving to be a compelling choice for Irish retirees ready to embrace their next chapter.
