Portugal is the 10th best country in the world for expats, with Expat Insider 2023 being led by Mexico. Although it has fallen compared to the last rankings (it was in 4th place in 2022 and 5th in 2021), it is the second European country in the top 10, only bettered by Spain, which is in 2nd place on the list. One of the positive points pointed out to Portugal by foreign citizens who choose the country to work is the quality of life. And in the opposite direction is the indicator related to the labour market.

This is, according to a ranking by InterNations, a global community for people living and working abroad that conducts the Expat Insider survey every year, the top 10 best countries for expats:

  2. Spain
  3. Panama
  4. Malaysia
  5. Taiwan
  6. Thailand
  7. Costa Rica
  8. Philippines
  9. Bahrain

It should be noted that the ranking covers 53 countries - more than 12,000 expatriates were surveyed - and considers the following indicators:

  • Quality of Life;
  • Ease of Installation;
  • Working abroad;
  • Essentials for Expatriates;
  • Personal Finance.

In the specific case of Portugal, the country is only in the top 10 in the Quality of Life index, occupying 7th place. It also performed well in the Ease of Installation (13th) and Personal Finance (12th) categories. On the other hand, in the indicators related to Essentials for Expats and Working Abroad, it is at the bottom of the table, occupying 31st and 43rd places, respectively.

The hospitality, friendliness and positivity of the people is praised in the report, but not aspects related to professional opportunities and career progression
