The Algarve region has won 3rd place in the "Most Popular Hiking Regions in Europe 2026" award, given by the German magazine Trekking Magazine.

The Portuguese region appears alongside historic mountain destinations such as the Dolomites/South Tyrol (1st place) and Brittany (2nd place). This recognition positions the Algarve among the top European destinations for those seeking trails, nature, and authentic experiences. More than just sun and beach, southern Portugal is establishing itself as a benchmark for nature tourism and hiking in Europe.

The Algarve: 3rd best European destination for hiking

A poll conducted by Trekking Magazine gathered approximately 35,000 readers, who chose their favourite regions for hiking in Europe. The Algarve came in 3rd place, behind only two destinations with a well-established tradition in alpine and coastal hiking.

This result is relevant for three main reasons:

  • It puts Portugal on the European hiking map
  • It reinforces the image of the Algarve as an active destination throughout the year
  • It validates the strategic investment in promoting trails and sustainable tourism.

According to a statement from Algarve Tourism, this distinction confirms a strategy that goes beyond seasonal tourism and focuses on diversifying the offerings.

Why is the Algarve one of the best hiking destinations in Europe?

The Algarve's success as a hiking destination is nothing new. In recent years, the region has invested in improving long-distance trails, signage, and international promotion.

Three factors explain this growing popularity:

  • Diverse landscapes: coastal cliffs, mountains, limestone hills, and rural interior;
  • Mild climate year-round: ideal for hiking outside of peak season;
  • Cultural authenticity: traditional villages and regional cuisine.

Unlike exclusively alpine destinations, the Algarve allows you to hike along the coast or in the mountainous interior, offering distinct experiences in a single region.

Sustainable tourism and combating seasonality

According to André Gomes, president of Algarve Tourism, the focus on hiking is part of a strategy for internationalisation and reducing seasonality. The goal is not only to create leisure activities, but also to generate a sustainable economic impact.

Hiking allows you to:

  • To revitalise rural areas
  • Support local accommodation and restaurants
  • Preserve natural landscapes
  • Valuing local cultures

This model helps to distribute tourist flow throughout the year, reducing pressure during the summer months.

Algarve Walking Season reinforces its commitment to nature.

European recognition comes just days before the start of the Algarve Walking Season, an initiative that includes five walking festivals.

The event is establishing itself as a key action in promoting the Algarve as a nature destination.

These festivals include:

  • Guided trails
  • Themed walks
  • Cultural activities
  • Local gastronomic experiences

This initiative reinforces the Algarve's position as an active tourism destination outside of peak season.
