This year Porto has entered the 100 most visited cities in the world ranking, joining Lisbon as a representative of Portugal on this list prepared by Euromonitor International. The Portuguese capital occupies the 62nd position - one postition higher than last year - and Porto debuts among the top 100 occupying the 96th position.
Euromonitor International estimates that 3.79 million people will visit Lisbon in 2019, an increase of 7.6% compared to 2017. For Porto the prediction is 2.39 million tourists, 7.1% more than in 2017.
This means during a period of five years, from 2012 to 2017, Porto rose 42 places in the ranking. Meanwhile, Lisbon improved its ranking by 11 positions throughout the period analysed.
The most visited city in the world is still Hong Kong, with an estimated total of 29.8 million visitors in 2018. It is followed by Bangkok (Thailand) and London (United Kingdom) with 23.7 and 20.7 million visitors respectively .
Euromonitor International considers international tourists as those who visit a foreign country for at least 24 hours and spend the night there, and cannot stay for longer than a year.
