The Portuguese coast has long been a popular destination to live, or to have a second home, both for Portuguese residents and ex-pats. This has meant that in recent years, modern luxury villas and gated communities of high class condominiums have appeared all along the coast. There's nothing wrong with this, but it can make you forget the history and tradition that Portugal has in such abundance. This week's property is an example of that heritage: a charming 17th century farmhouse with its own estate in Barcarena, just outside Lisbon. With easy access to Portugal's capital city, the property is well located to take advantage of all of the amenities that Lisbon has to offer, while still secluded enough to give you incredible privacy in your home, and is barely 10 minutes from several different beaches outside the city.

The property includes two buildings, with a total of 655m2 of floorspace between them. The main farmhouse takes up the majority of this, with 450m2 over two floors, but the second building is still plenty large enough to host guests, or simply serve as a storage space. The property boasts a total of seven bedrooms (six in the main house and a self-contained one bedroom apartment in the second building), with two extra spaces in the second building that could be converted into extra rooms, or even a separate apartment. The property also has a total of eight bathrooms. The property is rustic in design, with many traditional features, but has also been renovated to modern standards. Both buildings sit on an enormous, 10,000m2 plot of land, with beautifully maintained gardens full of tropical trees, old stone paths, sheltered walkways, seating areas, and even a large tiled fountain amongst the greenery.

As you step through the front door of the main house you are greeted by a stunning entrance hall, with flagstone floors and fantastic wooden beams across the ceiling. Off to one side is the spacious living room, complete with a built in fireplace, and tons of natural light flooding through the large windows. To the other side is an equally spacious dining room, again filled with light, which has access to the kitchen. Like the rest of the property, the aesthetic of the kitchen is rustic, with beautiful green tiling, but there are modern wooden workspaces on top of them, turning this traditional space into a functioning modern kitchen, with direct access to the garden outside. On the ground floor there is also a guest bathroom, and one of the property's bedroom suites.

Climbing the beautiful wooden staircase to the first floor you will find four large en-suite bedrooms, and a fifth bedroom without en-suite, but with beautiful mosaic tiling on the walls on all sides. All of the bedrooms mix traditional and rustic elements, such as the tiling, and stone seating areas beneath the windows, with modern wooden floors, and white walls which reflect the natural light that fills the spaces from the large windows. Outside you will find the second building with the aforementioned apartment and extra space, as well as the swimming pool, hidden away in the gardens, with its own changing rooms and bathroom.

This historic property is a genuinely stunning opportunity, with a beautiful rustic aesthetic that doesn't compromise on modern features, but makes a point of displaying the building's heritage. The house is for sale now on idealista for 2,600,000 euros.
