If you live in Portugal, then it's time to start thinking about submitting your 2022 IRS Income Tax return. Portugal's Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, António Mendonça Mendes, estimates that the processing of IRS refunds in 2022 will begin in the first fortnight of April, with taxpayers covered by the automatic IRS to be among the first contemplated. This is good news for taxpayers in Portugal after delays in previous years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"We will start processing refunds during the first fortnight of April," said António Mendonça Mendes, speaking to Lusa about the start of the new personal income tax campaign, which has already begun and runs until 30th June 2022.
For the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, "there is no reason" not to return this year to the refund deadlines observed in the pre-pandemic period and that we are talking about "deadlines that are around 17 days on average" after submission of the declaration. This average, he said, was the result of an average time of between 11 and 12 days for processing the automatic tax returns and between 19 and 20 days for the manual tax returns.
"The first declarations to be processed are processed a few days after the submission of the IRS declaration and, naturally, automatic IRS is quicker to process because these are situations whose calculation has already been made in advance by the Tax Authority and so it is only the final settlement that is being made," said Mendonça Mendes.
Highlighting the speed with which the Portuguese Tax Authority (AT) has been dealing with the processing of IRS refunds in recent years, Mendonça Mendes recalled, however, that the submission of the annual declaration can be made over three months, so there is no need for a "rush" in the early days of the campaign.
