How to decorate your house for the spooky holiday

The most terribly fun date of the year is fast approaching and it's the perfect time to let your imagination run wild. I might be over a week away, but it's better not to think of it at the last minute if you want to decorate your house as Halloween night deserves. You don't need to spend a lot of money and, what's more, you can even encourage the little ones in the house to do their part in the design and decoration. No ideas on where to start? With the help of the Habitissimo portal, we leave you with the most terrible advice (in a good way) for the spookiest time of year.

The fundamentals: pumpkins

There can be no Halloween night without pumpkins, the true MVPs of Halloween decor. But what to do with them? From drawing devilish faces to emptying them out and putting candles inside to create ghoulish lamps.

If you don't have time to carve them, or you don't want to get your hands dirty, you can always just pick out several pumpkins of different sizes and distribute them around the house or make some kind of still life display with them.

Ghosts, skulls and monstrous beings

This is where you can let your imagination run wild, or you can keep things low key: almost anything can serve to create a frightening atmosphere at home. A welcoming skeleton could be perfect. A discarded skull here or there, and a handful of bats, ghosts or little witches that your children can make out of cardboard will do a lot to help the house become a little haunted manor.

If you decorate the lights with felt or lay cobwebs hanging from furniture and lamps, it will add to the frightening effect!

The atmospheric touch

Now onto something very important: lighting. What can you do? First things first, reduce it. It's as simple as covering the lamps with dark scarves, preferably black but most dark colours will work. You can also create a backlight effect with one of the decorations we've already mentioned.

Do you have a candlestick or candlesticks at home? If so, don't doubt, just light them. And one more tip: use purple or orange LED strips half hidden behind furniture or in photo frames, and you'll be left with a spectacularly spooky atmosphere in your home.

Your Halloween table

First off: dress the table with a black tablecloth and some disposable cutlery designed for the occasion. If you have time, you can make some napkin rings out of cardboard and add a 'little detail' like a spider or some bones.

Those who like cooking can also prepare a menu for the occasion. Imagine a pumpkin soup decorated with strips of cream in the shape of a spider's web, some pizzas in which the cheese is in the shape of a ghost or a dark chocolate cake decorated with jellies in the shape of insects.

Remember the garden

If you have a garden, there's no better place to prepare scary surprises. An inviting skeleton, a flashlight on the stairs, a hand that seems to come out of the wall and, of course, a “trick-or-treat” poster, can all help to create the atmosphere you want.

With these ideas and a little creativity, you can make your house the scariest in the neighborhood on Halloween night.
