The Spanish supermarket giant Mercadona continues to invest in its expansion plan in Portugal, the first country chosen as part of the company's internationalisation strategy. After opening 10 new stores in 2020, in 2021 Mercadona will open the doors of a further 9 supermarkets, located in the North of Portugal, in the districts of Aveiro, Braga and Porto. For the opening of the new spaces, the company will create over 500 new jobs, with permanent contracts from the first day of work.
These shops will follow what is known as Mercadona's "new efficient store model" and will have a sales area of approximately 1,900m2. It is also worth highlighting the fact that all supermarkets scheduled to open in 2021 have already implemented the concept of the "6.25 Store" which focuses on a more eco-friendly strategy. Mercadona explained in a press release that "this shop concept, inserted in the 6.25 Strategy, intends to transmit to customers and employees the actions that are being carried out in relation to the reduction of plastic and waste management, thus allowing the feedback of customers in the field to be heard".
In the district of Porto there will be 5 new supermarkets which will be located in the city of Porto, Matosinhos, Vila do Conde, Felgueiras and in Valongo. In the Aveiro district, 2 new Mercadona supermarkets will be located in Espinho and in Santa Maria da Feira. Finally, in the district of Braga, there will also be 2 new openings in Guimarães and in Famalicão.
