You already have your mind set on that long-awaited trip or those days at the beach that you so desperately need, and you're in a hurry to pack your bags and leave as soon as possible. But the excitement of the holidays should not make you lose sight of something very important: preparing the house for your absence.

Taking the time to do a little housekeeping can prevent some discontent on your return. What should you pay attention to? And what do you need to do? The experts at Habitissimo have a few tips for preparing your home before you go on holiday.

First, keep the house clean

It's not about doing a general clean-up to get everything back in perfect condition - which, then again, is never a bad idea. It's mainly about making sure there's nothing  that could attract insects or cause unpleasant odours. Especially check the kitchen and bathrooms. And don't forget the rubbish.

Take a look in the fridge and freezer

Ideally, empty them before you go on holiday, as this will prevent any food from spoiling due to a problem with the electrical supply.

If you have no choice but to leave food, make sure it will last until your return and activate the "holiday" option- if your fridge has it. Don't forget the pantry too: you should check that jars, bags and containers are sealed tightly.

Check the plumbing

Always leave the general water tap turned off. This will prevent flooding if there is a leak. A quick inspection of taps, drains and toilets is recommended. A small leak can turn into a flood in less time than you think.

Unplug appliances

Before you go on holiday, take a walk around the house and make sure the lights and all appliances that can be are switched off. On the one hand, you will avoid that "phantom consumption" of what is standby and, on the other, you will reduce the risk of short circuits.

Don't forget the plants

If you don't have anyone to water the plants while you're away, make sure they're in perfect condition and in a place where they'll get enough light before you leave. Also check that they have enough water to last several days. If you have a garden, make sure the automatic irrigation is well-programmed.

Close windows tightly

There are some things you can't review too far in advance, but that need to be reviewed just before you close the doors to your home. Make sure you shut windows securely, albeit with the blinds slightly raised.

You should still take a few other precautions before you leave for your destination, such as emptying your letterbox or setting a light to come on from time to time. And, if you can, leave the key for someone you trust to check in from time to time.
