Portugal has once again positioned itself among the most desirable destinations in Europe for spring and summer 2026. According to the latest report from the European Travel Commission (ETC), demand for countries in southern Europe has increased by 17% compared to 2025.
The study also indicates that interest in travel is at its highest level since 2020. Despite this, Europeans are being more cautious in their decisions and spending.
Portugal among the most sought-after destinations in Europe.
The ETC report reveals that southern European countries remain the most attractive for leisure travel. Stable climate, safety, and good value for money are decisive factors. In the ranking of travel intentions.
Spain leads in travel intentions with 14%, followed by Italy (11%), France (8%), while Portugal and Greece both appear with 6% of preferences. This positioning confirms that Portugal maintains strong tourism competitiveness, especially in the sun and sea, city breaks, and nature tourism segments.
Why do Europeans choose Portugal?
According to ETC, there are three main criteria for choosing a destination:
- Security
- Pleasant and stable climate
- Attractive offers and good value for money
Portugal meets these three requirements. The country is regularly ranked among the safest in the world, has mild temperatures in spring and summer, and offers a diversity of experiences. You can enjoy the top beaches in the Algarve, culture in Lisbon and Porto, nature in Madeira and the Azores.
Furthermore, geographical proximity within Europe facilitates short and affordable trips.
Young people are driving the growth of travel.
One of the most relevant findings in the European Travel Commission's report is the significant increase in travel intentions among those aged 18 to 34. This age group is identified as the main driver of the 17% growth in demand.
Young Europeans are showing greater confidence in travelling and are looking for:
- Authentic experiences
- Destinations with a good cultural offering
- Flexible and shorter trips
- Controlled budgets
Portugal has benefited from this trend, especially in cities like Lisbon and Porto, which are becoming increasingly popular among young travellers and families.
Shorter trips and more moderate budgets
Despite the increased interest in travel, the report indicates a clear shift in consumer behaviour. Europeans are becoming more selective and budget-conscious.
- 38% plan stays of four to six nights
- 37% opt for trips of seven to 12 nights
- The number of travellers setting a budget of up to 1,000 euros has grown by 4%
According to Miguel Sanz, president of ETC, travellers are prioritising shorter stays and greater cost control, while maintaining a focus on the quality-price ratio.
The impact of geopolitical tensions on travel decisions.
The report also highlights the weight of international tensions in travellers' choices. Concerns about rising costs affect 20% of Europeans. Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East rose nine percentage points, reaching 18% of concerns.
In this context, destinations considered stable and safe gain a competitive advantage. Portugal benefits from this positive perception in the European landscape.
What does this mean for tourism in Portugal?
The fact that Portugal is among the preferred destinations for summer 2026 reinforces several trends:
- Consolidating the country as a trusted destination
- Continuing the search for sun and sea
- Growth of youth tourism
- Valuing authentic and sustainable experiences
With the high season approaching, regions such as the Algarve, Lisbon, Porto, and Madeira are expected to continue experiencing strong international demand.
