According to a recent study by TUI, Europe’s best child-friendly coastal city turns out to be a Portuguese capital that quietly ticks all those boxes.

Lisbon ranks first in Europe for child-friendly coastal holidays, scoring 9.16 out of 10 in a study by TUI that assessed attraction density, weather conditions and the availability of family accommodation.
Beyond the headline score, the Portuguese capital also benefits from its reputation as one of the world’s top 10 safest cities in 2026, which adds a layer of reassurance for parents travelling with younger children.
The research compared:
- Theme parks, aquariums and water parks
- Ice cream shops, arcades and swimming pools
- Parks and green spaces (per 10 km²)
- Family-friendly hotels (per 10 km²)
- Bookable excursions and organised experiences
A compact capital with serious convenience
One reason Lisbon performs so well is density. Parents tend to value the fun things there are to do within walking distance more than what exists somewhere across town.
The city has 17 parks (p/10 km²), 37 family-friendly hotels (p/10 km²), one of the highest figures in the ranking, and an entertainment score of 7.36 out of 10.
Areas along the River Tagus have playgrounds, cycle paths and open spaces where children can move around without constant traffic worries. Jardim da Estrela, Jardim do Príncipe Real, and the riverside Parque das Nações provide shade and proper green space in the middle of the city.
Over 200 family-friendly experiences in one city
Lisbon also stands out for flexibility. The study counted 211 bookable excursions and experiences in the city. That range gives families room to pace their days:
- Boat trips along the Tagus
- Tram rides through historic neighbourhoods
- Tile-painting workshops introducing children to traditional azulejos (painted ceramic tiles)
- Food tours that include simpler, child-friendly stops to sample traditional Lisbon food
- Day trips from Lisbon to nearby beaches in Cascais or Costa da Caparica
The Lisbon Aquarium, one of Europe’s largest indoor aquariums, remains the headline attraction. It sits inside Parque das Nações and is easy to combine with cable car rides and riverside walks.
Sunshine without punishing heat
Southern Europe can tip into uncomfortable heat during peak summer. Lisbon’s Atlantic position generally moderates temperatures compared with parts of the eastern Mediterranean.
The climate provides consistent summer warmth, but sea breezes from the Atlantic help take the edge off intense heatwaves. Mornings are usually comfortable for exploring, with afternoons suited to the beach or shaded parks.
Shaded squares, outdoor café terraces and riverside promenades make it easier to slow the pace when needed. The city centre is not car-dominated, and many pavements are broad enough for pushchairs, especially in more modern districts.

Lisbon is not flawless. It is hilly in older districts such as Alfama, and cobbled streets can be awkward with buggies. Accommodation in peak season is not cheap. Yet the city’s structure allows families to base themselves in flatter areas and still reach historic sites easily.
For parents who want a coastal European city break with the kids that does not feel chaotic, Lisbon currently sits at the top of the rankings for good reason.
