How much does it cost to rent a house in the cheapest municipality of Portugal? And the most expensive? Data released on 24th September 2020 by the Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE) show that in the first half of the year, the median value of rent of the 74,088 new contracts for renting family accommodation reached 5.47 euros per square metre (m2), 9.4% more than in the same period last year. But the cost of renting varies greatly from one part of the country to another. In the town of Cinfães (Viseu), for example, renting a house costs only 2.21 euros per square metre, i.e. a tenant in a 100m2 property would pay the landlord just 221 euros per month.

In the top 5 of the cheapest towns in Portugal in 2020, we can find Sátão, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Valpaços and Calheta, with median rent values of less than 2.35 euros per m2. On the other side of the table, where renting is more expensive, appears, as expected, Lisbon, the most expensive municipality to rent a property at 11.92 euros per m2.
