Renting a house in Portugal was 9.3% more expensive in 2018 than previous years, with the average cost per square metre for the whole country reaching 4.80 euro, which is 0.45 euro per square foot. However, rental prices in Portugal vary greatly by region, so we’ve compiled a list of the 30 cheapest places in Portugal to rent a house.
In Lisbon, in the local freguesia of Santo António, the median value per m2 is as high as 14.10 euro (1.30 euro/sq ft). That said, there are municipalities in Portugal where renting a 100 m2 (1,076 sq ft) house can cost just 170 euro, as in the case of Belmonte (Castelo Branco).
According to data released by the National Statistics Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estatísticas or INE), in Belmonte, Vila Nova de Fôz Coa, Sátão and Lamego the average rent is less than 2 euro/m2 (just 0.19 euro/sq ft). This is significantly cheaper than in Lisbon and Porto, where the square metre costs 11.16 euro and 7.85 euro and the sq ft is worth 1.04 euro and 0.73 euro, respectively.
