Where are the best universities in Portugal? 6 Portuguese universities have once again been included among the top 1,000 universities in the world in 2022 according to the Shanghai Ranking, with Harvard appearing at the top of the list, dominated by the United States.

The Shanghai Ranking takes into account 6 criteria, including the number of Nobel and Fields medals among graduate students and professors, the number of most cited researchers in their areas of expertise and the number of publications when it comes to Science journals, amongst others.

This year, more than 2,500 institutions were examined to establish the ranking of the best universities in the world.

The best universities in Portugal 2022

Looking at the Portuguese offerings in the ranking, institutions across the country have been included, with universities that are popular with both national students, as well as being among the best universities in Portugal for international students. The best universities in Portugal are:

  • The University of Lisbon and the University of Porto appear among the 201st and 300th best in the world, 
  • The University of Aveiro and the University of Minho, between the 400th and 500th best
  • NOVA University Lisbon and University of Coimbra between 500th and 600th place.

USA leads the offer of the best universities in the world

With Harvard in first place for the 20th consecutive year, US universities remain at the top of the 2022 edition of the Shanghai ranking, which has been carried out since 2003 by the independent firm Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.

Just like last year, Anglo-Saxon institutions dominate the top 10 in this global ranking:

  • 8 North American universities
  • 2 British universities

At the top of the list, Harvard is once again ahead of the also American Stanford. This year, another North American university, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), came in third place on the podium, relegating the British University of Cambridge to fourth place. It was followed by the American universities Berkeley (5th) and Princeton (6th) and Oxford (7th) in the UK.

In total, 39 North American universities appear in the top 100, while the first non-Anglo-Saxon institution, the French University Paris-Saclay, is ranked 16th.
