More than 50% of workers in Portugal received salaries lower than 1,000 euros per month in 2022, a percentage that rises to 65% in the case of young people under 30, according to data from the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security.

According to the document prepared by the Strategy and Planning Office (GEP) of the Ministry of Labour, in 2022 56% of workers in Portugal received a salary of less than 1,000 euros, a percentage that compares with 72% in 2015. In the case of young people, 65% received below 1,000 euros in 2022, compared to 84% in 2015.

The average salary of workers with remuneration declared to Social Security was 1,269.34 euros per month in 2022, 29% higher than in 2015, while for young people (up to 30 years old), the average salary was 1,037.57 euros, 40% more compared to 2015.

How much is the basic salary in Portugal? The GEP data also shows that the percentage of workers receiving up to 760 euros (the value of the national minimum wage in Portugal for 2023) halved in 2022 compared to 2015, falling from 60% to around 30%.

As for wage dynamics, the document indicates that workers who changed companies saw their wages grow by an average of 16.3 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021, while those who remained in the same company had an average increase of 6.2 per cent.
