Getting to grips with Portuguese wine is a fantastic way to understand the country itself. And while many people first think of Port from the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, that’s only scratching the surface. You also have the sunny plains of the Alentejo producing full-bodied reds, and the light, zesty Vinho Verde from the cooler, green north.

One of the best ways to dive into this winey world is through Portugal's wine festivals, which celebrate the harvest with fantastic local food, music and a real sense of community.

Overview of Portugal's wine festival calendar

The brilliant thing about Portugal's wine festival calendar is the sheer variety on offer. Most of the action is clustered around the autumn harvest, or vindima, with September an important time for festivals and cultural events in Portugal.

You'll find everything from slick, modern festivals that pair big-name music acts with high-end gastronomy to traditional village celebrations. These smaller events, often called a festa da vindima, are where you can see century-old traditions like grape treading by foot, listen to local folk music, and share a meal with the whole community.

Wine festivals in Northern Portugal

The north of Portugal is home to two of the country's most famous wine regions, the European city of Wine, Douro and Vinho Verde. The festivals here really reflect the distinct character of each place, from ancient traditions deep in the Douro Valley to more modern celebrations in the cities.

The Douro Porto Wine Festival is a huge annual event that feels more like a modern music festival with incredible wine and food as the headline acts. It usually takes place over a couple of days in early summer, and celebrates the region's famous produce in a really stylish way.

There's a 'Wine Village' where you can wander between stalls from different producers, tasting everything from classic ports to the Douro's excellent table wines. The food side is also a major draw, with a 'Chef's Court' featuring top chefs who create dishes specifically to pair with the local wines. To top it all off, there’s a proper lineup of national and international music acts.

Vindouro – Festa Pombalina

For a festival that’s as much about history as it is about wine, Vindouro is a must. It takes place in São João da Pesqueira, in the Douro Demarcated Region, from 4th to 7th September 2025. The whole event is a tribute to the Marquis of Pombal, who created the world's first demarcated wine region here back in 1756. You will see historical reenactments, a big parade celebrating the harvest, and lots of people in traditional dress

For a different kind of vibe, the Vinho Verde Fest in Braga is a more modern, urban affair. Held over a few days in early summer, it transforms the city's Praça Municipal into a huge open-air wine bar dedicated to the region's famously crisp and refreshing wine. Dozens of Vinho Verde producers set up stalls, so you can wander around and sample a huge variety. There is always a big focus on food pairings too, with local chefs doing show cooking, and plenty of music to create a relaxed, summery atmosphere.

The area surrounding Lisbon is a surprisingly diverse wine region, with everything from the famous sweet Moscatel from the Setúbal Peninsula to the crisp whites of Bucelas. This proximity to the capital means there are some brilliant, easily accessible festivals that celebrate these local traditions.

The town of Palmela, perched on a hill on the Setúbal Peninsula, hosts one of the region's most traditional and beloved harvest festivals, Festa das Vindimas Palmela

It's a huge community event that runs from 4th to 9th September. You'll see the traditional grape treading, known as the pisa da uva, and a big parade where floats are decorated with themes related to wine and the harvest. One of the central events is the crowning of the 'Rainha das Vindimas' (Queen of the Harvest), a tradition that really shows the festival's deep community roots.

The town of Alenquer, part of the wider Lisbon wine region, hosts one of the area's most popular events each year. For 2025, Alma do Vinho festival is scheduled to run from 11th to 14th September, offering four days of music and wine in the Parque Urbano da Romeira.

The festival draws in around 40,000 visitors who come to sample from a selection of nearly 300 different wines, mostly from the region's producers. It's also a cultural celebration of Alenquer's identity. Each evening features concerts from well-known Portuguese musicians, and there’s a real focus on local gastronomy, particularly fire-based cooking, alongside sensory exhibitions. A day ticket costs just 15 and gets you unlimited wine tastings.

The Madeira Wine Festival runs from August 24th to September 14th 2025, marking the beginning of the grape harvest. The whole thing kicks off in the capital, Funchal, where the central walkways of the Avenida Arriaga are filled with wine pavilions, food stalls, and exhibitions.

The festival also includes a proper, live harvest event. Head to the nearby village of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Here, you can watch the grape picking get underway in the vineyards, followed by a parade of the grape pickers. The main event is the traditional grape treading, which is done by foot in a large wooden trough.
