What are the best cities to live in in the world? The most exciting, fun and affordable? There are loads of cities that compete for these titles and Porto and Lisbon didn’t want to be left out. They have managed to get a place on the Time Out City Life Index ranking this year. The survey, which was carried out with 15,000 people from around the globe, assessed the cities based on their gastronomy, culture, kindness, affordability, happiness and quality of life.
The Time Out City Life Index 2018 ranks the most exciting cities in the world to visit and live in. The list contains a total of 32 cities.
We give you the top 10.
1 - Chicago (138.2 points)
With the highest general score, Chicago is the winner, being named the best city to live in. The food and drink, the happiness and cost of living are the pride of all who live there. The one downside is the security, the only area in which it obtained a lower score.
2 - Porto (137.9 points)
According to the survey, Porto is one of the best places on the planet to live, make friends and enjoy the nightlife. It is also considered one of the most affordable cities to live in as the prices are so low.
3 - New York (134.6 points)
Even though it’s one of the most stressful cities in the world, it’s also one the places that people most want to visit, as much for the culture and gastronomy as for the nightlife.
4 - Melbourne (132.3 points)
The Australian city got a higher score than any other in terms of happiness. Those surveyed revealed that it’s also a great city to make friends and the food is another of its strong points.
5 - London (131.4 points)
There’s no other place in the world like London, and this is reflected in the results of the survey. The participants liked it so much because there’s always something to do or see.
6 - Madrid (131.1 points)
A very culturally rich city, Madrid’s restaurants are always full and its inhabitants are big tapas-lovers. They eat out more than people in any other city.
7 - Manchester (130.9 points)
Socialise. This is probably the word that best sums up Manchester, the second British city on the list, as there’s always time for a drink and a chat with friends. Us Brits are pretty friendly and never turn down the chance for a bit of live Northern Soul music, a combination that makes Manchester the 7th best city in the world.
8 - Lisbon (130.2 points)
Lisbon is considered one of the cheapest cities around and a place where lots of people would like to live. As a city, it is proud of the sociability and sense of fun that characterise it.
9 - Philadelphia (129.2 points)
In terms of affordability, Philadelphia has the best standing. It is considered both one of the cheapest and one of the nicest places to live.
10 - Barcelona (128.4 points)
The food and its special culture just squeak Barcelona into the Top 10. It was rated one of the most pleasant places to live and a place with a great community spirit, exemplified by the fact that it has more volunteers than anywhere else.
