
Large fortunes, all over the planet, have their eyes set on the Portuguese real estate market, and more specifically, on luxury homes. And with limited time before new rules come into effect regarding the "Golden Visa", the attention is intense. But it does not come from every country equally: there are some countries with a special interest in luxury properties here: Spanish residents are the ones that carry out the most searches for luxury properties with 11.7% of the total, followed closely by those from the United Kingdom (11.6%), North Americans (9.7%), French (9.5%) and German (8.9%). These data are revealed in a study carried out by idealista, after analyzing searches of an international origin, for properties on sale in Portugal for more than 1 million euros.
This international interest in luxury properties in Portugal is mostly concentrated in six regions, which make up 88.8% of visits to the portal looking for luxury homes for sale in the country.

For luxury home in Portugal, Lisbon attracts the most foreigners attention

The data, broken down by region, reveal that Lisbon, a well known destination for foreign investment, is perhaps unsuprisingly the preferred area for foreign investors, as 40% of international searches for high-end properties are concentrated in this region. The main nationalities interested in this luxury product are the Spanish (13.0%), North Americans (11.1%), British (10.8%), Brazilian (10.4%) and French (7.1%).
Second in the ranking comes the region of Faro, with 28% of the searches for luxury properties carried out by foreigners. The nationalities that most seek luxury homes in the Algarve are British (12.9%), Dutch (11.5%), French (10.5%), German, and Spanish (10.0% in both cases).
The third position in the ranking goes to Setúbal with 8% of the searches. The countries that showed most interest here were Germany (15.1%), Spain (14.1%), the United Kingdom (11.7%), France (10.5%) and the United States (7.6% ).

The north and Madeira are of interest to foreigners for investment in high-end real estate, but less than other areas
The Porto district ranks fourth with 6% of luxury property searches carried out by foreigners. Spaniards showed the most interest with 13.6% of visits. Brazilians (12.5%), French (11.9%), North Americans (11.2%) and British (7.5%) follow.

Fifth place goes to Madeira Island, receiving 4% of luxury property searches carried out in Portugal by foreigners. The British (21.1%) and Germans (20.9%) are the most active in the search, followed by the North Americans (5.4%), Swiss (4.6%) and the French with 4.3 % of searches.
Finally, in sixth place in the ranking, comes the district of Braga with 2% of the searches. The nationality that showed the most interest in this district was the French (25.7%), followed by Brazilians (12.0%), Swiss (10.5%), Spanish (10.0%) and English (8.3 %).
