Braga will invest 123 million euros in housing, three times the amount initially planned in 2021. The investment in the new Local Housing Strategy (ELH) will be the "largest ever in the area of housing in Braga", according to João Rodrigues, councillor of the municipality, and foresees several interventions and policies until 2026 to respond to the population. The city has hit the headlines in recent years as a great places for foreigners to live, especially for retirement, and as a European city of the future.
"This is excellent news for Braga, for the Bracarenses and for the housing sector. Over the next few years, the municipality and Bragahabit will move forward with a series of solutions that will respond to a considerable fringe of the population that, today, has difficulty in asserting the fundamental right to decent housing, including many people and middle-class households that, traditionally, are not beneficiaries of this type of public policy", stresses João Rodrigues, quoted in a statement released by the municipality.
The new ELH - instrument that defines the strategy of intervention of the municipality of Braga in terms of housing policy - covers an overall investment of 123 million euros, which corresponds, on average, to an average investment per house of about 96,500.00 euros. "This is a very significant increase if compared to the ELH approved in 2021, reaching almost triple the value," refers the municipality.

Focus on renting and construction of new buildings
"In this context, the rehabilitation of housing fractions and other public facilities, the acquisition of land and housing fractions for rent, the rental of housing fractions for sub-letting and the construction of new buildings, until 2026, are planned as solutions to respond to the undignified conditions identified by the municipality of Braga, BragaHabit and other promoters", explains the councillor.
In this update, the number of families and persons included in the ELH has increased, respectively, by more 64% (+503 families) and 84% (+1653 persons), in a total universe of 1284 households and 3632 persons. This increase is a direct result of the increase in the waiting list of households flagged by BragaHabit and the increase in the number of families living in identified own and permanent dwellings that can access the 1st Right Programme.
According to IHRU, "there is agreement between the EHL (presented by Braga Municipality) and the principles and rules of the Support Programme for the Access to 1st Right Housing", and everything is now in place so that the collaboration agreement between the two entities can be signed in this scope.
