Misericórdia, Santa Maria Maior and Santo António. These are the three neighborhoods that attract the most ex-pats who want to buy a house in the Portuguese capital. There are two new areas that have started to gain ground, too - interesting insider news for those looking to invest. Arroios and Estrella are the places where demand has grown.

The historic centre of the capital has long been the focus of non-Portuguese investors. Chiado, Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré, Santos, Príncipe Real and Avenida da Liberdade are areas that have always whetted the appetite of those who come to Portugal from other countries. The truth is, however, that there are now new places that have peaked the interest of investors. The districts of Arroios and Estrela already have a place in the list of preferences.

Last year, these five neighborhoods accounted for more than half (57%) of the 1,100 transactions of foreign private buyers carried out in the Urban Rehabilitation Areas (Áreas de Reabilitação Urbanam or ARU) of Lisbon.

In total, 415 million euro were spent on home purchases by international private individuals in 2017. In the specific case of Arroios, the investment went from 29.7 million in 2016 to 34.7 million in 2017. In Estrella, international buyers spent 51 million euro on the acquisition of real estate in 2017, much more than the previous year (36 million).
