Among the most favourable cities for the development of startups in 2023, Lisbon occupies the 62nd position worldwide. And it is not the only Portuguese city in this global ranking. Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria and Aveiro are also among the thousand best cities in the world for the creation and development of startups.

Unsurprisingly, the Portuguese capital has the best position in the country with regard to business conditions favourable to the creation of startups, above all, for the area of marketing and sales. Specifically, Lisbon now ranks 62nd in the world among the best cities for startups in 2023 (up 21 places) and 16th at European level, points out HelloSafe (a platform that compares financial products) which prepared a study based on a StartupBlink database.

The second best ranked Portuguese city for startups is Porto, in 147th place, where the startup market is more focused on e-commerce and retail, says the same publication. In third place is Braga, which in this edition ranks 424th worldwide.

Completing the Portuguese presence among the thousand best cities for startups in 2023 are Coimbra in 557th position (down 116 places), Leiria in 639th (after rising from 965th place) and Aveiro in 739th (down from 667th position).

Funchal, on the other hand, was left off this list that gathers the best cities for startups in 2023, after being present for two years in a row.

Portugal is 16th best country in Europe for startups

Looking at Europe, Portugal was considered the 16th best country to develop startups, especially in the areas of marketing and sales, e-commerce, retail, software and data, points out the same study. In Portugal, there are about 334 startups today, including four unicorns (privately held startup companies valued at over 1 billion dollars). Portugal is also the country where the reference event Web Summit is organised.

With regard to the best Portuguese-speaking countries for startups, Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde and Angola are the four countries that make up the top 100. "Until last year, Brazil occupied the best position among Portuguese-speaking countries, but in 2023, Portugal, along with Japan, were the only countries in the top 30 to gain two positions, moving from 28th to 26th place," the same publication highlights.
