Portugal’s Atlantic archipelago, the Azores, has confirmed its official coastal bathing waters for the 2026 season. The update sets both the recognised bathing locations and the bathing season dates for each site.

This move comes after several years of tighter scrutiny of water quality in the Azores, and reflects both the region’s tourism appeal and its strict environmental protections.

How bathing waters are designated in the Azores

Every year, the Regional Government of the Azores reviews and updates which stretches of coast qualify as official águas balneares (bathing waters). For travellers, the official list is a useful indicator of where water quality is monitored, and lifeguard services and basic facilities are more likely to be present.

Reopening of Vila Franca do Campo islet

The most notable change to the 2026 bathing list is the return of swimming at the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo. This is a small volcanic islet just off the south coast of São Miguel that is a protected nature reserve.

São Miguel is the largest and most populous island in the Azores, and the islet has long been one of its most photographed spots, thanks to its almost circular crater lagoon and sheltered waters.

Bathing at the islet was suspended in the 2025 season after several years of water quality data fell below the standards required for official bathing waters.

Visitor numbers are managed through daily capacity limits and regulated boat access, measures designed to reduce pressure on marine life and coastal habitats.

Where to find the main Azores bathing waters in 2026

In 2026, the Azores will have 88 approved coastal bathing waters spread across all nine inhabited islands, with Pico, one of Portugal's top islands, leading the list with 26 bathing areas, followed closely by São Miguel with 25.

Terceira offers 16 recognised spots, while Faial, Graciosa, Santa Maria, São Jorge and Flores share a smaller number of designated zones, and the lesser-known Portuguese island of Corvo maintains a single official bathing area that is central to summer life on the island.

Azores bathing season dates and regional variations

When does the bathing season run?

One of the specific features of the Azores bathing regime is that the season does not start and end on the same day everywhere. Instead, the decree sets dates for each recognised bathing water individually.

For 2026, the bathing season in the Azores falls within two broad windows:

  • From 1st June to 13th July
  • From 31st August to 11th October
