Country homes in Portugal stand out for their charm, character and use of traditional materials such as wood, stone and brick. Also known as rustic homes, they appeal to buyers looking for a quieter lifestyle or an affordable second home in the countryside. However, finding one can be a challenge—whether you're a family or an investor—as country homes made up only 6% of all listings on idealista in the first quarter of 2025. And of those, just 24% are priced below €100,000.
The availability of country homes under €100,000 varies widely between districts. This category includes detached houses, with or without land.
In Setúbal, for example, only 1% of country homes for sale fall below the €100,000 mark. In Lisbon, the figure rises slightly to 7%. Other districts with a low proportion of affordable country properties include Évora (8%), Faro (9%), Madeira (9%), Porto (13%), Braga (13%), Beja (15%), São Miguel (17%), Aveiro (20%) and Portalegre (22%).
Districts where the share is above the national average include Viana do Castelo (28%), Santarém (30%), Vila Real (36%), Viseu (38%), Leiria (38%) and Coimbra (47%). The top three districts with the highest proportion of country homes under €100,000 are Bragança (50%), Guarda (58%) and Castelo Branco (61%).
Country homes still a niche market in Portugal
Despite their appeal, country homes remain a niche segment in the Portuguese property market, accounting for just 6% of all listings on idealista, regardless of price.
The district of Faro holds the largest share of country home listings, with 9% of the national total. It's followed by Porto (8%), Castelo Branco (8%), Setúbal (8%), Braga (6%), Viseu (6%), Beja (6%), Évora (6%), Santarém (6%) and Lisbon (6%).
In Viana do Castelo, country homes represent just 5% of the national total, followed by Portalegre (4%), Coimbra (4%), Guarda (3%), Leiria (3%), Aveiro (3%) and Vila Real (3%). In Bragança, just 2% of listings are for country homes, while Madeira accounts for only 1%.
On São Miguel Island, the market is so limited that its contribution to the national total is considered statistically insignificant.
