Apart from new number plate formats, those of you driving in Portugal will soon notice a new traffic sign. An amendment to the existing Portuguese traffic signs regulation, in line with the latest amendment to the Highway Code, states the creation of a new sign (with a blue background) indicating the approach to “residential or coexistence areas” (zonas residenciais ou de coexistência). The law comes into force in 180 days, that is, in March 2020.
According to the decree published in Diário da República - it is part of the new measures for the National Strategic Plan for Road Safety, PENSE 2020 -, "the residential or coexistence areas, designed for shared use by pedestrians and vehicles and with special traffic rules, should be marked as such, justifying the creation of an informative sign for residential or coexistence areas".
The new law also "distinguishes between traffic signs, traffic wardens' signs and drivers' signs". "In response to social developments, new information signs, new symbols for tourist, geographical, ecological and cultural indications are introduced, as well as new tables showing the graphical representation of drivers' signs, traffic regulators' signs and the graphical representation of illuminated signs", the same document states.
