The children of immigrants who have been living in Portugal for a year may be able to get Portuguese nationality if an amendment to the nationality law, which is under discussion in Parliament, is approved. The guarantee was given by the member of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) and coordinator of the working group of the Parliament, Constança Urbano de Sousa.

According to the MP, there is a political "consensus" on this point obtained in recent weeks, and the vote in this area will only take place at a meeting of the "Comissão de Assuntos Constitucionais, Direitos, Liberdades e Garantias" (the Committee of Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees), which has not yet been scheduled.

The working groups, which can be set up in Parliament, hold a prior debate on laws, proceed with indicative or illustrative votes, but the speciality vote is held in the parliamentary committees and the final overall vote in the Assembly, states the Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Negócios, quoting the news agency Lusa.

According to the news agency, the parties have referred a final position to the debate and vote in committee, with the CDS People's Party and Chega not participating in the process.

Under debate in Parliament are bills to amend the law on nationality, after the statutes of the PCP (Portuguese Communist Party) and PAN (People–Animals–Nature) were approved by the majority on 12th December 2019. The BE (Left Bloc) asked the commission to withdraw its project without a vote, in view of the announced vote against the PS.
