In 2019, the northern Portuguese city had already been considered the second best European destination.
The city of Braga has been chosen as the Best European Destination to visit in 2021, collecting 109,902 votes from internet users, 72% of which correspond to participants outside the national territory, the municipality announced this week. In 2019, Braga had already been considered the second Best European Destination. Now, it has won the first place, at a distance of over 31,000 votes from the city of Rome, in Italy, second ranked.
This is an initiative of European Best Destinations, a Brussels-based organisation that promotes culture and tourism in Europe and distinguishes, since 2010, the most modern and attractive cities to visit in the European Union.
For the Mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio, this vote is "the crowning glory of an unquestionable work of international affirmation of the Braga brand".
The mayor highlighted the support for this candidacy by many Portuguese people spread around the world, in addition to the commitment of the city itself, of the institutions and of the people of Braga.
"It is a result that fills us with pride and that will certainly have extremely positive effects on tourism and on the local, regional and national economy in the coming years", he underlined.
Braga's candidacy had the support of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rita Marques, the Regional Entity of Tourism of Porto and North Portugal and the Tourism Association of Porto and North (ATP), in addition to several municipalities, entities and citizens.
In this edition, Braga was the favourite destination of travellers from the United Kingdom and Brazil and one of the main choices of travellers from the United States and France.
Every year the organisation receives a vote from the Vatican, which this year was also deposited in the Braga candidacy.
"From now on, Braga will be even more present in the most reputable publications in the area of tourism around the world, which will make the city an increasingly sought-after destination for millions of travellers", Ricardo Rio also said.
Of the 20 destinations included in the vote, the first 15 will appear on the web page of the European Best Destinations and may thus be visited by travellers who use that information to choose their tourist destinations.
The Braga City Council underlines that the aforementioned page is the most visited regarding tourism in Europe, with an audience that exceeds 5.5 million travellers.
As in 2019, also this year Braga was the only Portuguese destination nominated to receive this distinction.
