The arrival of retirement is an important moment for people who have spent many long years working, and it is also a time when many decide to move abroad for a lifestyle change. When it comes to where to retire to, Lisbon is one of the cities with the best living conditions for pensioners, occupying 8th place in a ranking of 37 cities from all over the world, which are members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This is according to the British real estate company Audley Village. Let's find out more.
Leading the table of the best cities to retire to is Madrid. The Spanish capital is the city with the best living conditions for retirees, followed by Vienna (Austria) and Athens (Greece), which ranked second and third, respectively.
The Audley Village survey looked at several features, including retirement age, the pension plans in place in the various countries and their healthcare plans. Madrid leads the ranking mainly because it has the longest average length of retirement, 22 years - in Lisbon it is only 16 years - and to this is added the fact that it has one of the highest average life expectancy rates, 84 years on average. What's more, in the Spanish capital there are 339,583 inhabitants aged over 65, while in Lisbon there are 135,289.
According to Audley Village, Spain - in this case the country and not the city of Madrid - also tops the list of OECD nations where people are best prepared for retirement. In this ranking, Portugal comes in 10th place, with Greece and Austria, in that order, completing the podium.
