Portugal continues to shine as one of the best places to live in the world and yet again is standing out in various world rankings. Portugal was recently voted the best country in the world for teleworking when travelling, as well as being the fourth best country in the world for retirement. Now, Portugal is in the news again, this time because of Lisbon which has been named the fourth healthiest city in the world to live in 2022.

This is according to a recent study carried out by the British website Money.co.uk, which every year publishes its index of the healthiest places to live. This study analyses everything from average life expectancy to air pollution, obesity rates, safety and the number of hours of sunlight in each location. However, this year the study also took into consideration factors that have gained importance since the start of the pandemic. Let's have a closer look.

For the 2022 edition of the healthiest cities in the world, metrics such as health care, number of nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, and psychologists in each country per 100,000 population have been assessed. The study also looked at the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders, as well as overall health spending.

The study states that Lisbon has "2,806 hours of sunlight, helping citizens absorb the all-important vitamin D, great health care and promotes some of the healthiest lifestyle habits, with plenty of outdoor spaces to exercise". Another Portuguese city stands out in the top 20 healthiest cities in the world, in this case Porto, which is in 14th position.

The first place in the ranking belongs to the Spanish city of Valencia, followed by Madrid, also in neighbouring Spain. Third position is occupied by Canberra, in Australia. Lisbon in fourth place is followed by Tokyo (5th) in Japan, Zurich (6th) in Switzerland, Vienna (7th) in Austria, Chiang Mai (8th) in Thailand, Adelaide (9th) in Australia and Ljubljana (10th) in Slovenia.
