Spending time in the capital city is brilliant, but after a few days of hills, trams and cobbled streets, most people start searching for the closest beach to Lisbon. The good news is that some of the best beaches near Lisbon are less than an hour away, many of them accessible by direct train along the Linha de Cascais or by ferry across the Tagus.
While Praia de Algés is technically the closest beach to Lisbon city centre at around 9.5 km, it’s not the prettiest option. If you’re after cleaner water, proper Atlantic waves or dramatic cliffs, there are far better Lisbon beaches just a little further along the coast.
Praia de Carcavelos – best beach near Lisbon by train
If you type “best beach near Lisbon by train” into Google, Praia de Carcavelos is usually what comes up. It’s one of the most popular beaches near Lisbon for good reason. There’s a long sweep of golden sand, consistent Atlantic waves and a lively but manageable atmosphere.
Carcavelos has a strong surf culture, with several surf schools operating year-round, and it attracts a mix of students, local families and expats. Along the promenade you’ll find relaxed beach bars and seafood restaurants serving grilled fish and cold beers, especially busy on summer evenings.
Getting there is easy. Take the Linha de Cascais train from Cais do Sodré to Carcavelos station, which takes about 25 minutes, then walk five minutes to the sand.
Praia do Guincho – wild Atlantic scenery near Cascais
For dramatic scenery, Praia do Guincho is one of the most striking beaches near Lisbon. Set within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, it’s backed by dunes and low mountains, and the wind here can be serious.
This is one of the best beaches near Lisbon for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. The waves are powerful and the currents strong, so it’s better suited to confident swimmers. Even on busy summer weekends, the beach feels expansive and untamed.

Praia da Adraga – a scenic beach near Sintra
If you’re searching for a quieter, more photogenic beach near Lisbon, Praia da Adraga is a good bet. Also inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, it’s known for its rock formations, caves and steep cliffs.
The setting feels wilder and more remote than the beaches along the Cascais train line. It’s a favourite with walkers exploring the Sintra coastline, and sunset here can be particularly beautiful on a clear day. There’s a well-known seafood restaurant above the beach serving grilled fish and rice dishes.
There’s no direct train to the beach itself. Take the train to Sintra, then a bus towards Almoçageme and a short taxi ride, or drive in under an hour from Lisbon.
Praia do Estoril – calm waters near Lisbon
For calmer conditions and a slightly more local feel, Praia do Estoril, near São Pedro do Estoril station, is a good alternative to Carcavelos for a Lisbon day trip. It sits in a sheltered bay, which often means gentler waves.
It’s popular with swimmers and bodyboarders and tends to be a little less hectic than some of the larger beaches near Lisbon. The surrounding area has residential streets, small cafés and a relaxed, everyday vibe rather than a full-on resort feel.
Take the Linha de Cascais train and get off at São Pedro do Estoril. The beach is just a short walk from the station.
Praia de São Julião – space and surf near Ericeira
Closer to Ericeira, which is known as one of Portugal’s top surf towns, Praia de São Julião offers a long stretch of sand framed by tall cliffs. It’s one of the best beaches near Lisbon if you want space to spread out.
The waves can suit beginner to intermediate surfers depending on conditions, and there are walking trails above the beach with sweeping coastal views. If the Atlantic is rough, nearby Foz do Lizandro has a river mouth where the water is usually calmer for paddling.
Reach it by bus towards Ericeira, followed by a short taxi ride, or drive in around 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
Praia de São João – family-friendly beach near Lisbon
On the southern side of the Tagus, Praia de São João forms part of the long stretch of sand along Costa da Caparica. This is one of the closest beaches to Lisbon on the south bank and a favourite with families.
The beach is wide, sandy and backed by simple cafés and seasonal kiosks. It’s generally easier for swimming than Guincho, and there’s plenty of room even in summer. On clear days, you get wide views back across the water towards Lisbon.
Take the ferry to Cacilhas, then a bus south to Costa da Caparica. By car, it’s usually around 30 minutes without heavy traffic.
