Surfing in Portugal

Just a short drive up the coast from Lisbon lies Ericeira, a traditional fishing town that has earned its place on the global map. As Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve, it's a spot where cobbled streets and blue-and-white houses meet a deeply ingrained, laid-back surf culture.

Portugal and surfing go hand-in-hand these days. The wild Atlantic coastline, stretching north to south, is blessed with legendary breaks, hidden sandy coves, and a surf culture that’s blossomed in leaps and bounds.

There’s nowhere quite like Portugal for surfing. The coastline is peppered with breaks for every ability, friendly surf towns, and a laid-back pace that gets under your skin.

Portugal is an incredible destination, but it can quickly feel overwhelming when tourist hotspots become overcrowded. From packed city centres to busy beaches, many visitors flock to the same famous landmarks. However, there's so much more to explore beyond the typical sights.

Portugal's west coast is known for its perfect waves that attract tourists from all over the world, with Ericeira, Peniche and Nazaré being the destinations of choice for surfers. The municipality of Óbidos is also catching the wave and building a surf village with a wave pool.

The sun is out and the good waves are starting to form. It's a sign of surfers arriving on Portuguese beaches. But it is no longer just a summer phenomenon.

Summer is on the crest of the wave. And surfing in Portugal has attracted more and more surfers from all over the world, not least because it is much more than a sport.

It's time to say goodbye to the summer holidays again and start thinking about the Autumn.
