Europe Day 2026 is marked in Porto with concerts, cultural events and open-door activities that shine a light on peace, unity and everyday European cooperation. 

The date feels especially symbolic in the city and across the Iberian Peninsula, landing in the same decade that the EU is marking 40 years since Portugal joined the European project.

Europe Day 2026 takes place on 9th May. The focus for this year's celebrations in Porto is on the values of peace, unity and cooperation, and on the city’s place in the European Union.

Highlight events for Europe Day 2026 in Porto include:

  • a Europe-themed run of around five kilometres
  • a formal raising of the European Union flag at Porto City Hall
  • a food fair in General Humberto Delgado Square, showcasing regional food and dishes inspired by different parts of Europe
  • an open-air concert on Avenida dos Aliados with performances by singer Katia Guerreiro and the Portuguese Symphonic Band.

Extended programme around 9th May

Europe Day in Porto extends beyond a single date. Recent programmes, which are likely to be mirrored in 2026, have included:

  • A month-long photographic exhibition in the pedestrian underpass at Campanhã Intermodal Terminal, from 1st to 31st May
  • Night-time projection of the European Union flag on the façade of Porto City Hall on the evenings of 8th and 9th May
  • Guided tours of the municipal nursery and other facilities to show how local services are run and how European initiatives feed into urban management.
  • A curated display by the Porto Fire Brigade Regiment.

Most Europe Day activities in Porto and across the EU are free to attend. Some conferences or workshops may require prior registration or invitations.

Thematic conferences and debates on Europe’s future in Porto

A central feature of the wider Europe Day programme is a series of thematic conferences and debates scheduled around the main 9th May events.

Two cornerstone sessions are planned on European themes:

  • “40 Years of Portugal in the EU – The Path to Gender Equality” (7th May, Porto City Hall)
  • “Youth in Europe” and “Challenges and Environmental Transition in Europe: Paths to Sustainability” (15th May, Post Office Building)

Europe Day 2026 stands out as Portugal’s key contribution in a year that reinforces the country’s long-term commitment to the European project.
